EMBED
Learning about refugees, asylum seekers and migration is important for children. Below are some ways in which these topics can be more deeply embedded into school practice.

-
Create displays that celebrate diversity within the school, perhaps including languages spoken by children at home.
-
Review your schools’ policies. Is there an appropriate EAL policy, for example?
-
Carry out an audit of books in the library and classrooms to see how diverse the authors and characters are.
-
Carry out projects or plays around the theme of journeys or Sanctuary, e.g. ‘Where is your sanctuary?’
-
Encourage positive action, e.g. writing to your MP, support a local refugee charity.
-
Make contact with other schools, especially Schools of Sanctuary, to share ideas and best practice.
-
Celebrate Refugee Week, which takes place in June each year.
